Development Director Metro Theater Company


Metro Theater Company is seeking a mid-career development professional with a passion for theater and education to join our team as Development Director. Standing on the shoulders of MTC’s most recent key development officer, this position will be empowered both to improve existing systems and strategies and to develop new programs in support of broadening philanthropy. A full-time exempt position, this role will have a flexible work schedule, with annual compensation in the first year projected at $60,000. Broad Function:

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this position will participate as a key member of the MTC senior staff. In partnership with the Managing Director, this role 1) develops, supports, and implements fundraising and stewardship strategies to maintain, deepen, and identify new sources of contributed income; 2) directly manages all development activities including major gifts, corporate engagement, annual fund appeals, corporate and foundation grants, planned giving, and special events; 3) ensures all related donor records and gift recognitions are accurately maintained; and 4) manages and implements systems that impact the quality of MTC’s services to donors. The role’s oversight extends to both annual campaigns and multi-year campaigns, requiring thoughtful prioritization in the present and creative visioning for the future. The position is supported by a shared administrative support role and by MTC’s Board Development Committee.

Specific Duties:

Development Strategy and Communications

  • In partnership with the Managing Director and Board Development Committee, develop strategy for existing donor retention and new donor acquisition, analyzing industry best practices and existing internal Metro Theater Company data.
  • Support and execute annual and multi-year fund-raising plans in support of Metro Theater Company’s mission and programs, in collaboration with the Managing Director, Development Committee and Board.
  • Identify and secure new prospective donors – individuals, corporations, and foundations – through research, networking, and prospecting.
  • Oversee the creation of Metro Theater Company’s annual report, in partnership with contract graphic designer.
  • Serve as primary staff liaison to Board Development Committee.
  • Serve as a liaison to other board committees (executive, governance, finance, and personnel) as necessary, providing reports for bi-monthly board meetings on development progress and opportunities.

Annual Fund and Related Individual Giving Campaigns

  • Manage direct mail and email appeals for individual giving, including developing calendars, drafting copy, managing mailing, and tracking campaign results.
  • Provide creative direction to develop annual giving print, digital, or video collateral.
  • Organize campaign logistics for individual solicitations such as seasonal appeals, the Carol North and Nick Kryah major giving circle, young friends, GiveSTLDay, Giving Tuesday, etc.
  • Meet with and nurture relationships with individual donors.
  • Schedule and facilitate logistics for small group donor lunches, recognition, appreciation, or cultivation events.
  • Support on-site individual giving opportunities at main stage performances, as applicable.

Foundation, Corporate, and Government Relations

  • Manage and maintain calendar of grant deadlines; write and prepare proposals to public funding agencies, corporations, and foundations; track status of pending proposals; prepare and submit required interim and/or final reports.
  • Manage contracted grant writers, development interns, volunteers, and other consultants as necessary.
  • Schedule and take meetings with foundation, corporate, and government funders to continue to build and deepen relationships with key institutional partners.
  • Participate in and support key local, regional, statewide, and national advocacy initiatives, including Advocacy Day in Jefferson City.

Special Events

  • In partnership with Managing Director, Development Committee, event co-chairs, and event planning company, plan and execute the spring After Dark gala and MTC’s holiday fundraiser. Event responsibilities include auction/raffle procurement, scripting, seating logistics planning, recording and tracking event donations, budget adherence, registration lists, and event analysis.
  • Support the needs of fundraising event co-chairs and committees, scheduling and running event committee meetings and providing timely updates and follow ups to the committees.
  • Represent MTC at funder-related gatherings, public events and other cultivation opportunities.

Development Systems

  • Support the on-going maintenance of an annual development activities calendar, providing timely reminders of upcoming deadlines across the organization.
  • Maintain, process, and implement timely and accurate systems for receiving, recording and acknowledging all contributions.
  • Update, manage, and maintain donor database, CRM system (currently a Salesforce-based platform), gift reports, and (in conjunction with marketing staff) email distribution lists.
  • Ensure all donor lists are accurate and up to date for printing in program books and annual reports.
  • Support all necessary donor research to provide background on current prospective foundation, corporate, or individual donors.
  • Complete matching gift forms and protocols.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Enthusiasm for the power of the arts, arts in education, and youth development;
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations; adjust multiple priorities; strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills;
  • Detail-oriented with a passion for accuracy and a personal sense of accountability;
  • Strong people skills, feeling at ease with being one of several key public-facing roles interacting with current and prospective donors on behalf of an organization;
  • Creativity, energy, and a can-do attitude;
  • Familiarity with (or ability to learn) Salesforce/Patron Manager, Metro Theater Company’s current web-based CRM system; working knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs;
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development in opportunities;
  • Flexibility to attend evening and/or weekend meetings and events;
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
  • Five years of relevant experience in supporting and leading fundraising campaigns is preferred; data management background and/or an arts or cultural background is a plus;
  • Ability to work primarily remotely during the COVID pandemic and beyond if desired.
