Communications Specialist (Full-Time) Donald Danforth Plant Science Center


The Communications Specialist will play an essential role in creating content in line with our brand, communication plan, strategic objectives, and editorial calendar. A successful candidate’s high quality authentic content that informs and inspires key audiences will be deployed across 3 websites, 10 social media platforms, e-newsletters, and other collateral materials.

This person will have a demonstrated experience writing and copyediting for web, social platforms, email, and Google Ads. The Communications Specialist will also work to create imagery and video to support content, often with external agencies and designers. The Communications Specialist will share best practices, and work closely with the Digital Content Specialist to ensure content is optimized and scheduled in line with marketing objectives and editorial calendar.

As part of the team, this person will have the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule, with a combination of both in-office and remote work. They should be a self-starter, with keen attention to detail, comfort working individually and, in a team setting, in ways that reflect our core values.

Social Media

  • Create compelling, scientifically accurate digital content to position Center scientists as thought leaders and spur new collaborative research opportunities
  • Create inspiring stories and messaging that engages the public and assists in retaining and recruiting new supporters, volunteers, and event attendees
  • Channels include: Facebook (Danforth Center, BRDG Park, AgTech NEXT), Twitter (Danforth Center, BRDG Park, AgTech NEXT) Instagram (Danforth Center), LinkedIn (Danforth Center, BRDG Park, AgTech NEXT); assist with 39 North social as needed
  • Leverage and repurpose published articles, media clippings, releases, events, blogs, and web content
  • Create video clips and images, for social media campaigns


  • Draft bi-monthly blogs for the Danforth Center website
  • Create new and refreshed content for Danforth Center website, per annual calendar
  • Participate in the development of videos complement website
  • Work with Digital Content Specialist to select images that illustrate content
  • Assist with updating content for BRDG Park, AgTech NEXT and 39 North websites 1 – 2X per year


  • Develop Google/media ads in partnership with Digital Content Specialist
  • Develop content and images for paid advertising campaigns per the marketing strategy

Internal Communications

  • Develop and repurpose content for internal communications platform, WorkVivio (Intranet) and CommonGround (monthly internal e-newsletter)
  • Assist with creating content to promote internal events on WorkVivio and Slack


  • Draft and gather content for 39 North monthly e-newsletter
  • Draft nontechnical news releases
  • Assist with photo and video shoots
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Solution oriented – highly motivated self-starter
  • Ability to collaborate with others and serve as a cross functional team member
  • Strong work ethic/excellent time management skills
  • Proven copywriting and editing experience
  • Excellent verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to convey scientific information to a non-scientific audience
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to stay organized with strong attention to detail

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field.
  • 3+ years of years of relevant work experience
  • Previous work experience in scientific field or with science-based organizations is preferred
