Box Office Coordinator Opera Theatre of Saint Louis


The Box Office Coordinator is a temporary, full-time position which supports the day-to-day management and reporting of the box office, ultimately contributing to Opera Theatre’s broader marketing and PR team. The position performs administrative duties related to the company’s ticketing software, ticket sales, and customer service. This position will also assist the Associate Director for Audience Services in training and supervising seasonal box office staff during the opera season. Expected length of employment is March 2022 through the end of July 2022.

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization known for innovative productions featuring outstanding young artists. The company offers a festival opera season each spring which attracts ticket buyers from zip codes throughout the metropolitan area, as well as visitors from nearly 50 states and multiple countries. As of 2021, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis has presented 32 world premieres and 28 American premieres, which may be the highest percentage of new work in the repertory of any American company. In addition to the spring Festival Season, Opera Theatre operates year-round education and community programs serving nearly 17,000 local children and adults.

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis has a year-round artistic and administrative staff of approximately 40, which grows to approximately 500 during the Festival Season. Several hundred volunteer members of the Opera Theatre Guild provide support for all aspects of Opera Theatre’s work and advocate for the company throughout the greater St. Louis community. The company’s annual budget size is approximately $12 million; contributed revenue represents more than 50% of budget.



  • Assist patrons by phone, email, and at the box office window in selecting performances and seating for all ticketed Opera Theatre events, opera performances, lecture series, special events, and pre-show picnics;
  • Assist with donations by phone, email, and at the box office window;
  • Support and accurately code and process internal ticket requests from Opera Theatre staff for artists, press, donors, or other VIPs;
  • Staff the will call window prior to performances and during intermissions as needed;
  • Assist with the printing and distribution of patron tickets;
  • Assist with mobile box office needs at outside events as required;
  • Help to maintain a clean and healthy work environment, ensuring current marketing materials are prominently displayed for patrons and staff;
  • Assist with miscellaneous box office projects as directed by the Associate Director for Audience Services.

Tessitura Management

  • Build and maintain Tessitura skills across ticketing and reporting;
  • Assist with basic ticket, picnic, and sales reports as requested by the Associate Director for Audience Services;
  • Assist the Associate Director for Audience Services in training, onboarding, and supervising seasonal Box Office Representatives;
  • Maintain clear and accurate patron and sales records in every customer interaction.

Customer Service

  • Offer friendly and respectful customer service to all patrons and internal constituents in accordance with Opera Theatre’s standards of service;
  • Ensure that seasonal Box Office Representatives are also offering outstanding customer service to all patrons and internal constituents;
  • Provide accurate information about Opera Theatre, including background on singers, company history, parking, dining options, and “how to” information for first time opera-goers;
  • Help the Associate Director for Audience Services to ensure that seasonal staff are trained in and successfully implement the highest levels of customer service.


Qualifications / Requirements

Required Skills, Experience, Qualifications

  • High school diploma;
  • 2-3 years’ experience in box office, customer service, or retail preferred but not required;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office preferred but not required;
  • Familiarity with Tessitura preferred but not required.
